THE STORY.
Our leadership team realized that in most families in our community, the mother is often the backbone of the household, raising children and supporting the family. Therefore, as we envisioned beginning Yellow Elephant Coffee, we concluded that this agricultural project and coffee shop would offer a terrific opportunity to empower women in our community. Yellow Elephant Coffee is providing women with job opportunities that enable them to offer a better life for their children and extended families.
WHY EMPOWER WOMEN.
Women are frequently the backbone of a Rwandan family. In Rwandan culture, we say “Umugore ni Mutima w’ Urugo,” which communicates that a woman is the heart of the family. As Yellow Elephant Coffee empowers women with job opportunities, benefits will flow to their children, thereby transforming their families' lives.
WHY COFFEE.
Through Yellow Elephant Coffee, Rwanda Children strives to promote coffee production in the community. Coffee is one of the most reliable cash crops here in Rwanda. Changing people’s thinking so they better understand the economic benefits of coffee production is one of the main reasons we began Yellow Elephant Coffee. Growing coffee involves many stages, from the fields to roasting the beans. For this reason, Yellow Elephant Coffee employs a significant number of people across both the coffee-growing fields and the coffee shop. Yellow Elephant Coffee provides sustained funding to Rwanda Children, improving the lives of vulnerable families in our community.
Yellow Elephant Coffee is providing women in our community with greater self-worth, the ability to support their families, and the confidence to influence social change for themselves and others.

Some may ask,
"Why the name Yellow Elephant?"
Great question!
We decided on yellow because it's the color of hope. It's also a color we incorporated into Rwanda Children's logo. Elephants represent prosperity, and it's an animal many people associate with Africa.
Together the words Yellow Elephant represent hope and growth. They are also memorable and distinct!
Yellow Elephant Coffee is an agricultural and entrepreneurial initiative of Rwanda Children, launched with a grant from a generous partner.
Our purpose is to provide Rwanda Children with sustained funding to further RC's mission and ministry in support of vulnerable children and their families.
As with all of Rwanda Children’s agricultural and entrepreneurial initiatives, we employ workers from our community — people desperately in need of employment to feed their families and buy medicines and other necessities. For Yellow Elephant, we primarily employ single mothers who are the heads of their households and young adults who need employment and job skills.
